Gloriosum Philodendron (Philodendron gloriosum)

Gloriosum Philodendron is a collector favorite with oversized, velvety leaves that instantly make an indoor plant display feel lush and elevated. It is a great choice if you want dramatic foliage without needing a climbing pole, since it grows as a creeping plant that spreads across the surface of the pot. With bright, indirect light and steady moisture, it produces larger leaves and maintains a rich, premium look. If you want a statement plant that feels calm, substantial, and truly special, Gloriosum Philodendron delivers.

Distinctive Features

This philodendron is prized for broad, heart-shaped leaves with a deep green velvet surface and prominent pale veins that create bold contrast. Unlike many philodendrons, it grows as a terrestrial creeper, with the thick rhizome moving horizontally and sending up new leaves in a slow, steady progression. Leaf size can become impressive in good conditions, and the overall plant has a grounded, sculptural presence that reads as luxurious and refined. The soft texture and strong veining make each leaf feel like a design element, even when the plant is young.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Bright, indirect light is ideal, and avoid harsh direct sun that can scorch velvety leaves.
  • Soil: Airy, well-drained aroid mix that stays lightly moist but never soggy.
  • Water: Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil dry, and keep moisture consistent without waterlogging.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity supports best leaf size and condition, with average home humidity acceptable.
  • Growth Habit: Creeping terrestrial rhizome that prefers a wider pot to spread horizontally.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Feature in a wide pot where the velvety leaves and bold veining can be the centerpiece.
  • Plant Stands: Place at eye level so leaf texture and veining can be appreciated up close.
  • Living Room Accent: Use in a bright room to add a calm, luxurious tropical look without climbing height.
  • Collector Displays: Pair with glossy-leaf aroids to highlight contrast between velvet and shine.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist with partial dry-downs, and avoid letting the plant dry out completely for long periods.
  • Pot Choice: Use a wider container so the rhizome can crawl, and avoid burying the rhizome too deeply.
  • Feeding: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at a moderate strength.
  • Leaf Care: Dust gently with a soft cloth and avoid harsh wiping that can damage velvety surfaces.

Why Choose Gloriosum Philodendron?

  • Velvety Statement Leaves: Large, soft foliage creates a premium, dramatic indoor look.
  • Bold Veining: Pale veins add strong contrast and a refined, graphic pattern.
  • Non-Climbing Habit: Creeping growth offers a unique form that does not require a pole.
  • Collector Appeal: A standout plant that elevates indoor collections and decor.

Gloriosum Philodendron is a great choice when you want a luxurious foliage plant with a grounded, sculptural presence. Give it bright, indirect light, an airy mix, and steady moisture with good drainage, and it will reward you with larger, more impressive leaves over time. With a wide pot and gentle care, it becomes a lasting focal plant that brings a calm, high-end tropical feel indoors.

Sort of good for tough chewers??
Color: Deep Roots Carrot - Small, Size: Small Dog
The actual carrot part (orange part) is tough chewer approved and my dog loves. It’s basically the same shape and size as his kong. However the leaves (green part) is not tough chewer approved. He ripped ALL those leaves off and ate them within 5 minutes of me giving him the toy. However they passed through him fine.

Aggressive chewer puppy approved
Color: Cinamutt Roll - Large, Size: Large
My aggressive chewer puppy loves this. It is pretty sturdy. He hasn't destroyed it yet and he's had it for over 3 months now.

Pretty hard to clean
Color: Cinamutt Roll - Large, Size: Large
We've had this for about a week now. I have 2 dogs, one small one about 55lb. I bought this for my big girl, but lil man is determined to get the best of this toy. Usually they don't both go after the same toys, so this is interesting. The trouble is, neither one of them can get all the treats out if something makes it all the way down into the crevice. It's surprisingly deep. The up side is that they'll try for quite a while before giving up. The down side is even if you put it in the top rack of the dishwasher, something stuck deep in there isn't going anywhere until you dig it out yourself. I tried a plastic knife but it broke the second time I used it in there. I wound up using the metal handle of a reusable straw cleaner. Which then I had to wash that, too. Then it needs to dry overnight before it can be used again. All in all, the dogs like it fine, it's gross to scrape out and wash, takes longer than most toys to dry, and I have the feeling that will eventually cause me to pass it to someone else's dog long before my two have gotten tired of it. At this point I'm pulling out of the toy rotation for a week or two because I'm not ready to clean it a third time.

Hyena Proof
Color: Acorn - Large, Size: Large
I have an American Bulldog that would chew a brick if he didn’t have an alternative lying around. They won’t last forever (nothing does) but we’ve had two of these over the course of a year and for him that is nothing short of a miracle. And that is daily chewing like it’s his job. I highly recommend the Acornucopia for aggressive chewers with jaws like hyenas…so it’s probably great for your dog too.
